Kanchipuram Silk Saree Price Guide 2026: What You're Really Paying For

If you've spent any time shopping for a Kanchipuram silk saree, you've probably noticed the price range is enormous — the same "Kanchipuram silk saree" search turns up pieces at ₹1,500 and pieces at ₹1,50,000. That's not random markup. A genuine Kanchipuram silk saree's price comes down to three things: the silk itself, the zari, and the weave. Once you understand how each one moves the price, you can tell a fair price from an inflated one — and know exactly what you're paying for at your own budget.

1. The silk

Pure mulberry silk costs more than blended or "art silk" (synthetic) alternatives, and it's the single biggest price driver. Within pure silk, weight matters too — a saree woven with a heavier silk count (more threads per warp) uses more raw material and takes longer to weave, which shows up directly in the price. A semi-silk or silk-cotton blend will always be cheaper than 100% pure mulberry silk of comparable size, and that's a legitimate, honestly-priced product — the problem is only when a blend is sold as if it were pure silk.

2. The zari

Zari is the metallic thread used in the border, pallu, and motifs. Traditional zari is a silver thread electroplated with gold — real silver and gold cost real money, and a saree with dense, heavy zari work will always cost more than one with a thin, minimal border. Most of the market today uses "tested zari" — a copper thread with a much thinner silver coating — which is a perfectly legitimate lower-cost option, but it should be priced and disclosed as such rather than sold at pure-zari prices. 3. The weave

A plain border costs less to weave than a heavy temple border. A fully brocaded pallu with dense motifs takes a weaver significantly longer than a simple contrast-color pallu. The korvai technique itself — where the body and border are woven separately and interlocked — is more labor-intensive than a single continuous weave, and that labor is priced into every genuine Kanchipuram silk saree regardless of tier.

What you're actually getting at each price point

Based on what these three factors buy you, here's roughly what to expect:

Under ₹2,000

Usually semi-silk or silk-blend fabric with tested zari and a simpler, lighter weave. Good for everyday festive wear or a first saree — not the tier to expect a heavy bridal look from. Browse this range.

This is where pure silk starts to appear consistently, usually paired with tested or half-fine zari and moderate border work. A solid choice for festive occasions and family functions. Browse this range.

Pure silk with better zari coverage and more detailed borders and pallu work becomes standard here. Many buyers in this tier are shopping for engagements, receptions, or a "second" wedding-adjacent saree. Browse this range.

How to avoid overpaying

  • Ask directly whether the zari is pure or tested — a reputable seller will tell you plainly, since it's not something to hide at any price point.
  • Compare weight, not just look — two sarees can look similar in photos with very different silk and zari content.
  • Check for the Silk Mark where claimed — it's a real certification from the Silk Mark Organization of India, not just a sticker.
  • Be skeptical of steep discounts on "pure silk, pure zari" claims — the raw material cost has a floor; a price far below that floor usually means one of the three factors above isn't what's advertised.
