What Makes a Kanchipuram Silk Saree Different
A true Kanchipuram silk saree is woven using the korvai technique, where the body and the border are woven separately on the loom and then interlocked together — a process that makes the border strong enough to outlast the body of the saree itself. The silk used is pure mulberry silk, and the zari (the metallic thread used for borders and motifs) is traditionally silver thread dipped in gold. This is what gives an authentic Kanchipuram saree its characteristic weight, sheen, and durability compared to printed or machine-made imitations.
How to Identify an Authentic Kanchipuram Silk Saree
Check the border join: a genuine korvai saree shows a distinct zigzag line where the contrast border meets the body — this is the interlocking weave, not print or embroidery.
Feel the weight: pure silk with real zari has a noticeable heft; very light, slippery fabric is usually a sign of art silk or blended silk.
Look at the pallu and motifs: traditional motifs — peacocks, temple borders, checks (rudraksham), and mango (mangai) patterns — are woven in, not printed on top.
