Collection: Kanchipuram Silk Sarees

Kanchipuram Silk Sarees are among the most sought-after handloom silk sarees in India, woven in and around the temple town of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. At Kanchipuram Lakshaya Silks, every saree in this collection is genuine mulberry silk woven with real zari, sourced and finished the way Kanchipuram sarees have been made for generations.

What Makes a Kanchipuram Silk Saree Different

A true Kanchipuram silk saree is woven using the korvai technique, where the body and the border are woven separately on the loom and then interlocked together — a process that makes the border strong enough to outlast the body of the saree itself. The silk used is pure mulberry silk, and the zari (the metallic thread used for borders and motifs) is traditionally silver thread dipped in gold. This is what gives an authentic Kanchipuram saree its characteristic weight, sheen, and durability compared to printed or machine-made imitations.

How to Identify an Authentic Kanchipuram Silk Saree

  • Check the border join: a genuine korvai saree shows a distinct zigzag line where the contrast border meets the body — this is the interlocking weave, not print or embroidery.
  • Feel the weight: pure silk with real zari has a noticeable heft; very light, slippery fabric is usually a sign of art silk or blended silk.
  • Look at the pallu and motifs: traditional motifs — peacocks, temple borders, checks (rudraksham), and mango (mangai) patterns — are woven in, not printed on top.
  • Ask for a Silk Mark or GI tag reference — Kanchipuram silk is a Geographical Indication (GI) tagged product, and reputable weavers and retailers can speak to the origin of their silk and zari.

Shopping by Occasion

Kanchipuram silk sarees are the traditional choice for weddings, Muhurtham, engagements, and festive occasions like Navaratri and Diwali, but lighter-weight soft silk and semi-silk Kanchipuram weaves are increasingly worn for everyday festive wear, office functions, and family get-togethers. Our collection spans bridal-weight silks with heavy zari borders through to lighter, more affordable weaves for everyday festive occasions.

A Note on Price

Genuine Kanchipuram silk saree pricing depends mainly on three things: the silk quality, the amount and quality of zari used, and the intricacy of the weave (plain border vs. heavy temple border vs. fully brocaded pallu). As a manufacturer selling direct from our own looms in Kanchipuram, we're able to offer authentic handloom sarees across a wide range — from everyday pure silk pieces to elaborate bridal silks — without the retail markups of a middleman.
